What is the Outpatient Clinic?

The clinic provides medical consultations and procedures as an outpatient service. Services that are provided include premature infant follow-up, medical-surgical follow-up, RSV immunization, and paediatric oncology.

Within the clinic is a formalized POGO (Paediatric Oncology Group of Ontario) satellite clinic. It is one of four satellite oncology clinics in the Province of Ontario. Care is provided within the partnership of the paediatric Oncology Group of Ontario and the staff work closely with the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto and the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario, London.

The outpatient clinic is staffed by registered nurses who work closely with other departments within the K-W Health Centre to coordinate care for the child.

APPOINTMENTS ARE REQUIRED AND MADE BY REFERRAL ONLY

JUVENILE DIABETES CLINIC

The Diabetes Education Centre (Child and Adolescent) program at Grand River Hospital provides education and on going support for individuals (and their families) who have been diagnosed with diabetes.

The team of health care professionals that specialize in diabetes includes a paediatrician, certified diabetes educators, a nurse, dietician, and social worker who help patients and families understand and better manage diabetes. Recognizing that learning to live with diabetes takes time, knowledge, and practice, the team is available to assist with present day-to-day issues for different age groups.

Ongoing visits with the team are scheduled every three months in clinics. Additional support is provided on an individual basis or through telephone contact. New initiatives in place include insulin pump therapy.

CYSTIC FIBROSIS CLINIC

The Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Clinic at Grand River Hospital provides education, treatment, and support for individuals with CF and their families. Clinic visits are scheduled every three months and patients are seen by a multidisciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses, a physiotherapist, respiratory therapist, pharmacist, social worker, and dietician. Patients are assessed and given support in all aspects of their illness enabling them to maximize health and adjust to this chronic disease. At a clinic visit, a patient will leave with a treatment plan as well as the medications and supplements needed for the next three months. Children and adults are seen in separate clinics. Support is available outside of clinic visits. The CF clinic also arranges carrier testing and education for those at risk for CF. The clinic is part of the network of Cystic Fibrosis Clinics supported by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
