GENERAL INFORMATION Protecting your hospitalized child Your hospitalized child needs to be protected from infections. All people entering the nursery must wash their hands with soap and water. As parents, it is important to be aware of your own health history. Two common childhood illnesses, chickenpox and measles, can have serious consequences to babies. You need to ask yourself: Have I ever been vaccinated against measles? If you have answered "No" or "unsure" to the above question, it is possible that you may contract the illness if you are in contact with someone who has or is carrying it. Please call the nursery or the children's unit if you have any questions or suspect that you may have been in contact with either of these diseases. Common colds, cold sores and stomach flu's can be serious infections for infants. Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, cough, sore throat, runny nose, or itchy eyes are all indications that you may not be well enough to visit with your child. Please call the nursery or the children's unit if you have any questions. Other visitors must also understand the need for wellness in the hospital will need to comply with visiting guidelines and hand-washing rules. Security The staff who care for infants and children wear badges with a pink frame around their picture and a bear logo behind their name. If someone approaches you or asks questions about your child, who is not wearing this I.D., contact your nurse immediately. No one will be permitted to visit or receive information about your child without your expressed permission. Getting information about your child You may call anytime, day or night, and speak to your child's nurse to find out how he/she is doing.
You may not see your child's doctor every day, depending on when the doctor comes in, but you can request an appointment or speak with him/her on the telephone. Telephones Outgoing calls will need to be made from pay phones. The closest phones are in the main hall, near the elevators and in some of the waiting rooms.
