Intensive Care Unit About Intensive Care Grand River Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) provides care for adults and children with acute, life threatening medical conditions. With currently 12 patient beds, patients receive care from a multidisciplinary team of experts under the direction of a medical director. The intensive care team includes intensivists, physicians, acute care nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, respiratory therapists, social work, spiritual care, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and many other support persons. To meet the growing needs of our community, a new ICU space has been planned which will more than triple the current space and bring an additional 8 patient beds. Each patient will have a private care space of 225 square feet separated by glass partitions to provide caregivers improved visibility at all times and greatly enhanced privacy for patients and their families. Each bed will be fitted with 'articulating arms', two easily manipulated mechanical arms that provide storage and house state-of-the-art medical equipment necessary for care in the ICU allowing staff improved access to the patient and a better, uncluttered care environment for patients. Five new isolation rooms will be available for patients whose condition necessitates isolation, or who are at high-risk of contracting infections. For family members who wish to spend the night, two onsite courtesy rooms with sleeper chairs will be available (as well as a spacious waiting area, a bathroom with shower and a kitchenette), fostering a family-centred approach to care and recovery.
