Psychiatry and Mental Health

Adult Psychiatry Services at GRH

Inpatient Services

1F Inpatient Psychiatry Unit

  • Provides inpatient assessment and treatment for individuals who require the safety of a hospital setting
  • Psychiatrists work in collaboration with nurses, social workers, psychologists, and occupational therapists to assess patients and to provide treatment
  • Current average length of stay is 10 days, however depending on the patient's needs and diagnosis, the range may vary.
  • Admission must be approved by a psychiatrist and is most often accessed after an assessment by the Crisis Team and emergency physician. Some patients are admitted through a referral by a community psychiatrist.

Outpatient Services

Triage

  • A mental health worker is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by phone at 519-749-4310 to accept referrals for Grand River Hospital mental health services from patients' family physician. If you do not have a family physician, referrals are accepted from urgent care clinics or other mental health care providers
  • The triage mental health worker will determine if the patient is suitable for Grand River Hospital's mental health services and if so, will direct the referral to the appropriate service
  • Wait times for access to outpatient services may vary from 1 to 12 weeks depending upon the urgency of the referral and service requested

Hazelglen Mental Health Outreach Program

  • Hazelglen Mental Health Outreach offers treatment in the patient's home or a Hazelglen office for those experiencing an acute mental health crisis who would otherwise require inpatient hospitalization
  • An assessment by a triage worker or crisis nurse in the emergency department will determine it the patient is suitable for this service
  • The length of treatment and support through Hazelglen is usually 2-8 weeks

Rapid Response Team (RRT)

  • The rapid response team provides timely assessment, consultation and follow-up by a clinician for a maximum of four sessions and psychiatric consultation may be arranged if needed
  • Referrals for this team are arranged through triage or crisis team
  • Offers intervention usually within 48 to 72 hours to individuals (19 years of age or older) who are experiencing an acute, serious mental health condition

Community Outreach and Treatment Team

  • This team provides medication monitoring and long-term support to individuals with severe and persisting mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
  • Support and education are provided to family members
  • Also includes treatment with injectable medications and monitoring of patients on Clozaril or patients on a community treatment order.
  • Referrals to this service are made internally from other Grand River Hospital psychiatric and mental health services

Psychiatric Consultation Clinic

  • The psychiatric consultation clinic provides an assessment/consultation service to physicians related to diagnostic, medication management or other treatment recommendation issues.

    Transitional Treatment Program

    • Building on the strengths of our past Rivendell Day Treatment program, we are in the process of developing an extended support program to help our patients transition back into important life activities and community supports
    • This will include medication management, skills teaching, follow-up planning and support

    Withdrawal Management Centre

    • The Withdrawal Management Centre provides short-term, non-medical residential support for individuals who are withdrawing from alcohol or drugs
    • Individuals may stay at the Centre for a few days until their withdrawal symptoms have subsided
    • Individuals are referred to residential and community treatment services
    • We are in the process of developing day treatment services to meet the needs of our patients
    • Please contact 519-749-4318 for further information

    Crisis Services

    • Mental health nursing staff provide 24/7 consultation to emergency department staff
    • This service can be accessed during mental health emergencies through the Grand River Hospital emergency department, after being registered by the triage nurse
