1F Inpatient Psychiatry Unit
- Provides inpatient assessment and treatment for individuals who require the safety of a hospital setting
- Psychiatrists work in collaboration with nurses, social workers, psychologists, and occupational therapists to assess patients and to provide treatment
- Current average length of stay is 10 days, however depending on the patient's needs and diagnosis, the range may vary.
- Admission must be approved by a psychiatrist and is most often accessed after an assessment by the Crisis Team and emergency physician. Some patients are admitted through a referral by a community psychiatrist.
Triage
- A mental health worker is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by phone at 519-749-4310 to accept referrals for Grand River Hospital mental health services from patients' family physician. If you do not have a family physician, referrals are accepted from urgent care clinics or other mental health care providers
- The triage mental health worker will determine if the patient is suitable for Grand River Hospital's mental health services and if so, will direct the referral to the appropriate service
- Wait times for access to outpatient services may vary from 1 to 12 weeks depending upon the urgency of the referral and service requested
Hazelglen Mental Health Outreach Program
- Hazelglen Mental Health Outreach offers treatment in the patient's home or a Hazelglen office for those experiencing an acute mental health crisis who would otherwise require inpatient hospitalization
- An assessment by a triage worker or crisis nurse in the emergency department will determine it the patient is suitable for this service
- The length of treatment and support through Hazelglen is usually 2-8 weeks
Rapid Response Team (RRT)
- The rapid response team provides timely assessment, consultation and follow-up by a clinician for a maximum of four sessions and psychiatric consultation may be arranged if needed
- Referrals for this team are arranged through triage or crisis team
- Offers intervention usually within 48 to 72 hours to individuals (19 years of age or older) who are experiencing an acute, serious mental health condition
Community Outreach and Treatment Team
- This team provides medication monitoring and long-term support to individuals with severe and persisting mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
- Support and education are provided to family members
- Also includes treatment with injectable medications and monitoring of patients on Clozaril or patients on a community treatment order.
- Referrals to this service are made internally from other Grand River Hospital psychiatric and mental health services
