Child and Adolescent Services at GRH

Inpatient Services

Child and Adolescent Inpatient Program

  • The child and adolescent program is an eight-bed, short-stay inpatient unit for children and adolescents up to 18 years of age with an average length of stay of five days
  • The CAIP team works together with the patient and family to stabilize psychiatric symptoms, engage the youngster in treatment and develop a plan for further care upon discharge.
  • Referrals are often made to both hospital based outpatient services and community supports as part of the follow-up plan
  • More intensive transitional support services are available for patients upon discharge when required

Outpatient Services

Triage

  • A mental health worker is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by phone at 519-749-4310 to accept referrals for Grand River Hospital mental health services from patients' family physician. If you do not have a family physician, referrals are accepted from urgent care clinics or other mental health care providers
  • The triage mental health worker will determine if the patient is suitable for Grand River Hospital's mental health services and if so, will direct the referral to the appropriate service
  • Wait times for access to outpatient services are generally one month or less depending upon the urgency of the referral and service requested
  • Family physicians may fax referrals to 519-749-4301
  • In a crisis situation not requiring inpatient care, all services are mandated to respond urgently

Preschool Diagnostic Services

  • Preschool diagnostic services provide early identification, assessment, consultation and treatment services for children, who are experiencing behavioural, emotional, and developmental difficulties
  • The program sees children who are between the ages of 2 ½ and 5 years of age, and their families

Segregated Assessment Partnership Program (SAPP)

  • Segregated assessment partnership program is a service provided by the preschool diagnostic services in conjunction with the Waterloo Region District School Board
  • Focusing on a child's difficulty adapting to school settings, children will attend over a period of 8 to 10 weeks to participate in a structured program four afternoons per week

Child and Family Center

  • The Child and Family Centre's multidisciplinary team provides assessments, consultations and treatment for children between 6 and 12 years of age who are experiencing complex problems that impact their social, emotional, learning and behaviour functions. The centre works with parents, schools, and community services to develop a plan based on the child's needs and strengths and focusing on skill development, coping strategies and symptom management

Adolescent Team

  • The adolescent team's multidisciplinary staff provides mental health assessment, consultation and treatment for adolescents between 13 and 18 years of age with suspected or confirmed severe or complicated psychiatric diagnosis
  • In some cases, youths that are 19 to 20 years of age may also receive services from the adolescent team

Young Adult Program

  • The Young Adult Program is an intervention program for young adults ages 16 to 21 with mental health problems that have seriously impacted their functioning. The program runs on a daily basis, including a therapeutic classroom placement, group based intervention, and individual and family based treatment with a focus on social, emotional and academic issues that have made learning in a regular school setting difficult
  • Psychiatric treatment is usually provided through the adolescent team, but other services may be involved as needed

Consultation Clinic

  • Can only be accessed by a referral from a physician who is requesting diagnostic clarification and/or treatment recommendations for children up to 18 years of age.
  • A psychiatrist and a nurse meet with the child and key family members and forward a comprehensive psychiatric assessment to the child's family physician.
  • Follow-up or other treatment services are offered as indicated

Crisis Services

  • Mental health nursing staff provide 24/7 consultation to emergency department staff
  • This service can be accessed during mental health emergencies through the Grand River Hospital emergency department, after being registered by the triage nurse
