Waterloo Regional Homes

Waterloo Regional Homes for Mental Health Inc. provides support and housing for adults who experience serious mental health issues. Housing is provided through a range of options from group homes to apartment living. Support is available to assist people to reach their recovery goals, as well as with daily living skills, crisis support, community involvement, symptom management and education. Waterloo Regional Homes also provides treatment, rehabilitation, and support for those with severe and persistent mental health issues, through the organization's Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team. A Crisis Respite Residential Program is available to individuals who are experiencing a psychosocial crisis or are in need of a planned respite stay.

First Step (Early Psychosis Program)

Based out of the Community and Mental Health Centre in Guelph (newly named Trellis), this program is available to all Waterloo-Wellington residents who are experiencing early symptoms of psychosis (hallucinations, delusions and disorganized thoughts). With a goal of early detection of untreated psychosis the promotion of long-term health and wellness, access can be arranged by contacting the program at 519-821-2060, extension 738.

Crisis Services

Crisis Services for Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas are coordinated by the Canadian Mental Health Association. They can be accessed day or night by calling 519-744-1813 or toll free through 1-800-366-4566..

Community Counselling Services

There are many available within the community to provide support, assessment, and counselling. Family physicians or patients may call the individual agency of their choice to make a referral. Grand River Hospital works in partnership with associated community partners to collaborate in providing care.

In addition, many places of work offer their staff access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). Please check with your benefits package, or contact your employer to confirm. Some family health care teams also offer access to counselling services and there are many excellent private practitioners, including psychologists, general practitioner-psychotherapists and social workers in the community who may be able to help.

St. Mary's Substance Abuse Services

The agency offers a wide array of substance abuse assessment and treatment services, with links to other supports available in the community and Province. Services at St. Mary's can be accessed at 519-745-2585.

Canadian Mental Health Association, Grand River Branch

CMHA works with the community to provide access to mental health information, education, referral services and individualized support services commonly referred to as support coordination or case management. A walk-in resource centre service is available in both downtown Kitchener and Cambridge. CMHA services emphasize a flexible, holistic, recovery-based approach and advocates with individuals for planning service improvements. In Waterloo Region, CMHA provides the 24/7 crisis line and mobile crisis response team, crisis and risk assessment with linkages to emergency services.

Eating Disorders Program

The Eating Disorders Program (facilitated through the Trellis and Mental Health Development Services) provides assessment and treatment for children, adolescents, and adults with symptoms of an eating disorder. Available to residents of Waterloo Region and Wellington/Dufferin counties, the service can be accessed by calling 519-821-3592 or 1-800-471-1732.

Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Strategy

Developed by representatives of local mental health and social services agencies, the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Strategy's goal is to raise the profile of the tragedy of suicide, educate the community, and encourage more people to play a role in reducing the incidents of suicide.
