Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at Grand River Hospital Grand River Hospital has the only hospital-based MRI in Waterloo Region. We provide service to residents of Waterloo Region, Wellington-Guelph, and beyond. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term care funds the operation of our MRI. Currently, the hospital is funded to operate the MRI 60 hours per week. We see approximately 16 patients a day. Patients are referred for MRI scans by their family physicians, or specialists. Patients are booked for appointments based on medical need. An MRI is a painless, non-invasive procedure that enables physicians to view detailed, internal images of the human body without using x-rays. This technology uses a large magnet, radio waves and a computer to scan patients. MRI is especially useful in imaging the brain, spinal cord, musculoskeletal system, abdomen, pelvis, and major blood vessels.
