Radiation Therapy at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre The Grand River Regional Cancer Centre currently has four radiation machines, with the ability to bring two additional machines on-line by 2010. Radiation therapy is provided at the cancer centre to patients from Waterloo Region, Wellington-Guelph, and beyond. The Grand River Regional Cancer Centre currently provides comprehensive radiation therapy service. Referral for treatment is made by an oncologist. The Grand River Regional Cancer Centre is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for outpatient treatment. Emergencies are seen through an on-call service. Radiation therapy is a form of cancer treatment that directs high-energy radiation beams at cancer cells to eliminate them, or to shrink tumours. Radiation is effective because it interferes with cancer cell production, making cells unable to grow and self-repair. Radiation therapy can be used by itself or in combination with other treatment forms. Measuring Radiation Therapy Wait Times Wait times for radiation therapy at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre are measured from receipt of a new referral at the cancer centre to the time that patient receives his/her first radiation treatment. Cancer Care Ontario lists this data as a median time, which is the point at which one half of the patients have started treatment, and the other half are still waiting. For example, if the median time from referral to treatment is three weeks, that means 50% of the patients will have begun their treatment within three weeks, and the other 50% will wait longer than three weeks Click Here to VIEW CURRENT RADIATION THERAPY WAIT TIMES AT THE GRAND RIVER REGIONAL CANCER CENTRE |
